Be Careful with Toning Shoes

Researchers from the American Council on Exercise put the popular toning shoes to the test. [1] They recruited people to wear EasyTones, Shape-ups and MBTs and walk on treadmills.  When the researchers measured the muscle activities, they found no significant increase in muscle activities comparing toning shoes to normal sneakers.  In addition, toning shoes can cause tendonitis, especially in the tendo-achilles and other tendons supporting the foot and ankle.

The only time the toner shoes are helpful is when you have arthritis of foot or ankle.  They allow rocking motion of the foot to lessen the pressure to the arthritic joints.  If you want to wear the toning shoes, be careful not to fall and to slowly get used to the shoes.
