Bitter Melon for Diabetes Control

bitter melonBitter melon is a green-colored, unripe fruit that is commonly used in Asian cooking and for its medicinal properties. The fruit and leaves of bitter melon contain vitamins A and C, omega-6 fatty acids and b-complex vitamins. Bitter melon also contains active substances such as charantin, vicine and lectin that can lower glucose levels. Under the care of a doctor, adding bitter melon to your diet may help contribute to diabetes care.*

Bitter melon comes in supplement form, and can be made into a tea by infusing its dried leaves and fruit in boiling water for five minutes. While bitter melon is generally considered safe, do not take it if you are pregnant as it can induce contractions.
