If you notice a fatty bump underneath the layer of skin on top of your foot, there is no cause for alarm. A lipoma is the accumulation and growth of fat cells that can be found just below the skin. They can be found almost anywhere on the body and since they are considered noncancerous; there is really no need for treatment. However, a lipoma on the foot can be bothersome and cause painful irritation when walking in shoes. If symptoms occur such as pain, infection from inflammation, increase in size, or interference with natural movement, then you should see a foot doctor to have it promptly removed.[1]
Surgery is required to remove a lipoma if it begins to bother you. Make sure it is lipoma and not a cyst.
