You’re home and you can’t wait to take off the work shoes and throw on a pair of fun flip-flops. Don’t breathe a sign of relief yet! Wearing flip-flops can actually do as much harm as wearing high-heels. Flip-flops can cause structural damage because your feet are “free” and there is no support. The feet will either contract too much or not enough, which will result in bunions or hammertoes. In a closed shoe, hammertoes are revealed because of the calluses formed from the shoe. With flip-flops, the calluses don’t form and a lot of damage goes unnoticed.[1]
Go for shoes, or sandals, that provide you with support! It’s not worth the other long-term damage of back pain, knee pain, and plantar fasciitis.
