Did you ever wonder what the sticker on fruits and vegetables mean? The PLU (Price Look Up code) sticker tells the customer “whether the fruit was organically grown, genetically modified, or produced with chemical fertilizers, herbicides or fungicides.” Stickers with four digits that start with either “3” or “4” means that the produce was conventionally grown and exposed to weed killers and chemical pesticides. Those with five digits that start with “8” means that the produce was genetically modified. Those that start with “9” were produced organically. [1]
Check out those stickers and be wise about which produce you pick! We need to do more than just rely on what the produce looks like, feels like, and smells like.
