Periodontal Disease Links to Heart Health

Here is another reason to take care of your teeth and gums: Harvard Dental School has found that people with periodontal disease have higher rates of heart attacks and cardiovascular-related strokes and death. While the causal relationship has not yet been determined, scientists believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible for the association. If you have existing heart conditions, periodontal disease can make things worse, and the use of antibiotics prior to dental procedures may be required.*

Periodontal disease is avoidable if you practice healthy habits such as brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. If you experience red, swollen, or sore gums, see your dentist as soon as possible because gum disease can lead to more serious health problems when left untreated.
