The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused many explosions at nuclear reactors releasing radiation into the atmosphere. There have been concerns on where the radiation is going and whom it will affect. For those that have been affected, potassium iodide is given to help prevent thyroid cancer. Potassium iodide is a form of salt that protects the thyroid gland from radiation. Potassium iodide is most effective when given before exposure as it protects for about 24 hours.[1]
If you or someone you know lives within a 10-mile radius of a commercial nuclear plant, a stockpile of potassium iodide would be wise to have. Potassium iodide can be found online or at some health food stores.
