Shin splints don’t just happen with runners or dancers. The tibial stress syndrome can happen at any time whether you are jogging or just sprinting a short distance. Shin splints are actually a small condition that is part of a bigger problem such as irritated or swollen muscles, stress fractures, or overpronation (flat-feet). Symptoms of shin splints include a dull pain in the lower front part of your shin, the area may be painful to touch and sometimes if you have swollen muscles it can irritate the nerves in your feet making them feel weak.[1]
If you think you have shin splints, ice the area and keep the area in gentle motion. If the pain persists, see your doctor right away to see if there is a more severe cause.
