Swelling of the feet and ankles is never a fun thing. There can be many causes to these symptoms such as: prolonged standing, long car rides or plane flights, menstrual periods or pregnancy, being overweight and increased age. Some more serious causes are swelling from injury or an infection. Swollen legs, for example, can be a symptom of heart, kidney or liver failure when there is excess fluid in the body. The lower part of the body is the first to show excess fluids because of the natural flow of gravity.[1]
Treatments for swelling can be as easy as staying active to improve your circulation, icing the area or losing weight. If you are uncertain why you have some swelling then you need to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis.
