Because melanoma can spread, it is the most serious type of skin cancer. In 2012 there were over 9,000 melanoma related US deaths; and each year there are around 50,000 new cases reported. Most of us would look to our shoulders and chest for funny looking spots (signs of melanoma cancer), but it is so important to remember your feet too. Take a look down and examine your feet. Do you see any growths that are unusual in shape or varying in color? When noticing any of these symptoms, take caution by suspecting cancer and contact your podiatrist or dermatologist right away.[1]
If you notice any moles that are not asymmetrical, without smooth borders, varying in color or larger than the size of a pencil eraser, then take caution; early detection of melanoma is crucial for favorable results.
