Watch Out for New Carpeting

New carpeting can include highly toxic chemicals like acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. The largest release of these chemicals occurs within the first 72 hours after installing a new carpet. However, low levels can continue to be released in your environment for years. Often, wheezing and coughing in babies is associated with new carpet installation.*

Understand your options. Natural carpeting material, such as wool, typically does not contain these types of chemicals. If you opt for traditional carpeting, make sure to regularly ventilate your home so that fresh air can take the place of toxic fumes.
